How Little We Are

How lovely we are,
but how little we are,
less than a cosmic speck,
less than a grain of sand
or a pebble on the land.
Humans are less than dust,
insignificant nothingness.
Light takes eight minutes
to speed from our sun to us.
Light travels at 186,000 miles per second.
A light-year is the distance travelled
by light in one Earth-year.
Our galaxy, the Milky Way,
is 110,000 light years in diameter.
Our galaxy contains 300 billion stars.
In the observed universe
there are 170 billion galaxies,
many far bigger than our galaxy,
and some contain trillions of stars.
There are more stars
than we have grains of sand.
How little we are,
less than a cosmic speck,
less than a grain of sand
or a pebble on the land.
How little we are,
but how lovely we are.
