WORLD’S OLDEST EEL FOUND DEAD IN SWEDISH WELL

WORLD’S OLDEST EEL FOUND DEAD IN SWEDISH WELL
When Åle entered the world in 1859, Napoleon III was King of France, and work had just started on the Suez Canal.
But in the little Swedish fishing town of Brantevik, the eel thought to be the oldest in the world has just slithered his last.
Tomas Kjellman, the owner of the well where Åle lived out his long life, told thelocal.se of his memories of the 155 year-old fish.
“My family bought the cottage in 1962, and we always knew the housepet was included,” Mr Kjellman said.
Before public water systems were developed in the 1960s, it was common practice to drop eels in to household wells to get rid of flies and bugs.
“Eels normally only live to be seven years old, they usually get so fat and their intestinal canals stop working. But this one just lived and lived and lived,” said Mr Kjellman, according to: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/sweden/11023470/Swedish-eel-slithers-its-last-after-155-years.html
